What's this program all about?
AmeriCorps Polk Reads is a grant-funded reading tutoring program in Polk County, Florida. Members (Tutors) provide one-on-one reading tutoring to Kindergarten – 3rd grade public school students at selected school sites. Our sites for the 2017-2018 school year are Kingsford Elementary, Socrum Elementary, Kathleen Elementary, Philip O'Brien Elementary, Garner Elementary, Dixieland Elementary, Griffin Elementary, Spook Hill Elementary, Gibbons Street Elementary and Lake Alfred Elementary. Our members provided three, thirty minute, one-on-one tutoring sessions per week to around 400 students who are behind in reading. These sessions target the five components of effective reading instruction (phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary development, reading fluency and reading comprehension strategies) and work to move students up in their reading levels.
AmeriCorps Polk Reads is made possible through a partnership between the Polk Education Foundation, Polk County Schools, and Volunteer Florida, Inc. As well as local support from George W. Jenkins Fund within the GiveWell Community Foundation, GiveWell Community Foundation, and proceeds from the PEF's Stepping Out for Eduation event.
Polk Reads Member Spotlights
"My desire and motivation to work with Americorps is definitely because I am blessed to have the privilege of working with these precious children. To see them happy to come to me, there drive to learn more every time, there willingness to show what they have learned and how much they grow each time in Knowledge and understanding, is such a Joy!! They brighten my day, and remind me of the many things we all take for granted in life, like the ability to read. It is rewarding to be able to give out new books to the Children and through that continue to enhance their learning experience not just in School but at home too!" - Elizabeth Alicea
"Americorps was recommended to me by my friend, Sarah, who was once a member. She said it would be a great fit for me because of my passion to help kids. I also aspire to be an art teacher and an English professor. Americorps just made sense; the training and the experience are what I need to reach my goals. The time spent with students reawaken that dream everyday as I watch them learn and grow. Knowing that I am a part of that makes the experience worth while". - Raisha Desmarais
