General Information

Health Science Education comprises the body of subject matter and planned learning experiences designed to prepare students with competencies required to assist qualified health professionals in providing diagnostic, therapeutic, preventive, and rehabilitative services in health care facilities, in the home, and in the community.

Areas of study include health careers, employability skills, patient care skills, emergency medical technology, clinical laboratory skills, nursing assistant, dental assisting and pharmacy technician.

Health Science Education programs are offered at Auburndale High School, Bartow High School, George Jenkins High School, Lake Gibson High School, Lakeland High School, McKeel Academy, Travis Career Center, and Ridge Career Center.

There are articulation agreements with Polk Community College, Traviss Career Center and Ridge Career Center for students who complete Health Science Education clusters.

Students also have the opportunity for internships and job shadowing experiences at local health care facilities, including area hospitals.

Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) is the appropriate Career Student Organization for Health Science Education. Students learn leadership skills, compete in local, regional, state and national competitions.

Health Science Education

A Health Science Advisory Council for High School Medical Academies was initiated in 2007 to increase the communication between teachers and the Health Field; therefore, the academy is increasing the opportunities for students. If you are currently in the medical field and would like to join the Advisory Council please click here to email Nathan Neuman.
