Fact Sheet

WHO?
One team of six students and one coach is selected from each 5th grade to represent the elementary school in the district in this tournament.

WHAT?
The tournament is an academic, quiz-bowl type competition for 5th grade students. Each school team consists of six members (four players and two alternates) and a coach. A maximum of six teams may compete in one competition round. This is not a quick response, trivial pursuit contest. Instead, it is a slower-paced tournament in which players are asked questions from the areas of economics, mathematics, science, language arts and social studies. The questions are written by educators from district schools to mirror existing curricula.

WHERE and WHEN?
The 2008 tournament begins with area competitions in January. The final round is scheduled for 3:15 PM on Thursday, March 20 at The Lakeland Center. The public is invited and encouraged to attend this competition. There is no charge for admission.

WHY?
E-Team's goal is to provide an arena of competition in which 5th grade students are challenged to display their knowledge of basic economic terms and concepts along with their knowledge in the core subject areas of language arts, mathematics, science and social studies. The team members and head coach of the six teams in the County Championship each receive a trophy, and each of these schools is awarded a trophy.

HOW?
Polk County's 5th Grade E-Team Tournament is sponsored by the School Board of Polk County and the Polk Economic Education Council.
