#13: Creating Edit Points on the Fly

Using the Razorblade tool is one of the most popular ways to cut clips into segments. It's easy. But then there's even a faster way: by using shortcuts. We can hit the b key to automatically select the Razorblade tool, click where we want to cut, then hit the a key to go back to our Selection tool.

This method is fast when you're making a lot of edits, and quadrouples your editing speed. But sometimes there are even faster ways to make a simple cut within FCP.

  1. Place your playhead where you want to create a cut
  2. Hit the Control + V key.

One of the MAJOR advantages to using this method is that it does not stop your playhead from moving.

If you are editing a music video, you can play the timeline, and everywhere you want to make a cut, simply hit the Control + V key. A Red marker will appear on the timeline until you stop, or press the spacebar. Then the markers will cut all of your clips.

Fast Cuts

If you are working on multiple video tracks, the CTRL+V cutting shortcut will cut ALL tracks at that specific point. If this yields undesirable results, select the clip you are wanting to make cuts to, and the CTRL+V option will only apply to the selected clip, and not other video tracks.
