The problem:
Bullying is a common problem in schools. Some studies indicate that bullying is not only the first form of violence that children experience in schools, but is the most common form of violence as well. The direct costs of bullying are expressed in reduced academic achievement, increased absenteeism, and the promotion of other, sometimes more serious forms of violent interaction. The American Medical Association has determined that bullying is a public-health issue with short and long term consequences for everyone involved. A study reported by Time magazine (April 18, 2005) states that 47% of sixth-graders said they were bullied at least once in the course of five school days. Bullying is the first form of violence that many experience, and it isn’t fun.
