Celebrate Literacy Week, Florida!

January 23-27, 2012Celebrate Literacy Week

The goals of Celebrate Literacy Week, Florida! are to promote literacy throughout the state by raising awareness of the great things happening in school districts and the programs and projects offered by the FLDOE and its partner agencies and organizations. Most of all, the objective is to promote the enjoyment of reading for children and adults of all ages.

Polk County Schools will take part in various activities during the week by decorating hallways, showcasing favorite books through office and classroom displays, library media open house, participating in the million minute reading marathon on Tuesday, January 24 and other ways.

The Florida Department of Education held a contest in which schools created a 26 second public service announcement (PSA) that celebrates and promotes the importance of literacy in the state of Florida.

Three of Polk County schools are finalist for the state award. Spessard Holland is one of the finalist for the elementary category, Stambaugh and Lake Gibson are finalist in the middle school category. An award ceremony will be held at the Daytona International Speedway on January 25 where winners will be announced.
