Two students from Harrison School for the Arts have been awarded corporate-sponsored National Merit Scholarships.
Annie F. Cheng and Cheston P. Humphries of Lakeland are among approximately 1,000 students to be awarded corporate-sponsored National Merit Scholarships -- financed by about 200 corporations, company foundations and other business organizations.
Corporate sponsors provide National Merit Scholarships for finalists who are children of their employees, who are residents of communities the company serves, or who plan to pursue college majors or careers the sponsor wishes to encourage.
Cheng received the National Merit JBT Corporation Scholarship and would like to become a Foreign Service member. Humphries has been given the National Merit Reynolds American Foundation Scholarship and plans to study music.
The recipients of $2,500 National Merit Scholarships will be announced next month, and the winners of the college-sponsored Merit Scholarships will be announced in two waves in June.
The National Merit Scholarship Program began in 1955 and recognizes students with outstanding academic records. Some 7,500 students nationwide will be named finalists by the conclusion of this year’s competition.
