More ways to keep up with the latest news from Polk County Public Schools:
For two weeks students from Highland Grove Elementary conducted a food drive to provide baskets to those in need throughout the Polk County community and families at the school who needed food for the holidays. The collected food items were also used make Thanksgiving baskets for the school’s custodial staff as a gesture of appreciation.
Sixteen 5th grade leadership students collected, boxed and loaded 3,510 items. But not even this activity provided a respite for these hard working students. The food drive became part of a classroom lesson. Students used their categorizing and graphing skills throughout the “real world” learning process. In the end, the kids calculated they moved more than 1.5 tons of items valued at more than $3,000.
It’s also worth noting that Volunteers in Service to the Elderly (VISTE),a non-profit students provided items to, cited Highlands Grove Elementary as the highest contributing holiday food drive school in Polk County for the sixth year in a row.
