The October application period for Polk County magnet and choice schools is from Monday, October 5 to Friday, October 30. Applications will be accepted during this period only for students currently of school age. Students applying during this October application period must at least be in kindergarten. Applications will be posted online at www.polk-fl.net under the “Announcements” heading on the school district’s home page. Individuals without computer or Internet access can visit any magnet or choice school or the Office of Magnet, Choice and Charter Schools in Bartow to complete the application on school district computers. The statewide October dates for FCAT retakes in math and reading are Monday, October 19 for reading and Tuesday, October 20 for math. Graduated students from a Florida public high school with a certificate of completion and wanting to retake the math and/or reading portions of the FCAT this month can call (863) 534-0688 to receive testing information and to register. The deadline to register is Wednesday, October 14.
The artwork of students attending four Polk middle schools with an intensive arts curriculum will be featured at the Polk Museum of Art from October 20 to November 15. The title of the show is “Transitions: Works from Middle Schools of the Arts”and features the work of middle school students from the following schools: Davenport School Of The Arts, Jewett School Of The Arts (Winter Haven), McLaughlin Middle And Fine Arts Academy (Lake Wales) and Rochelle School Of The Arts (Lakeland). The Polk Museum of Art is located at 800 East Palmetto St., Lakeland. The show will be displayed during normal museum hours and the museum’s standard admission fees apply. The Florida Bandmasters Association Annual Marching Band Festival will be held Saturday, October 24, 5:30 to 10:30 p.m. at Denison Stadium, 400 Avenue A Southeast, Winter Haven. High school bands will present music, marching and pageantry. The Marching Band Festival involves the most students, staff, volunteers and spectators in one location than any other single-day school district event during the school year. High school bands perform in timed intervals during the course of the evening. Ticket prices are $7 for adults and $5 for children 12-years-old and younger. Information: (863) 647-4727.
