Student Reporter Takes on U.S. Political Heavyweights

September 18, 2012

Shelby Fallin filming with video cameraAt 14-years-old, Shelby Fallin is already a veteran reporter. The George Jenkins High freshman has been reporting for Scholastic News Kids Press Corps since she was 8-years-old.

She’s interviewed some of the biggest names on the political scene including John McCain, Mitt Romney, and Marco Rubio. She’s even had an opportunity to interview Hollywood stars such as actor John Voight.

Her latest reporting assignment was as a political reporter at the Republican National Convention held the week of August 27th in Tampa. And like other full-time reporters, she worked a tough shift putting in some very long days in order to deliver hard hitting political news.

Her mother, a teacher at Griffin Elementary, is proud of all Shelby has accomplished. Of her daughter’s passion for journalism, Cynthia Fallin says, “Shelby is good at what she does because she loves doing it. A lot of people think we pushed her into it, but that’s not the case. She loves reporting.”

Shelby echoes her mother’s words. She says, “I just really enjoy doing it… It’s fulfilling to be able to share the truth. It’s what people need whether they want it or not.”

When asked which political figures she hopes to interview next she names President Barack Obama and former President George W. Bush. She says, “I would like to interview President Barack Obama or George Bush because they have both been in the White House. I believe a lot of people overestimate or underestimate how easy the job is. I want to get the truth.”

But that’s not all. You can also add mentor to her growing resume. She is currently mentoring an 11-year-old Scholastic News Kids Press Corps reporter. Click here to view their recent appearance on CNN.

Shelby is currently enrolled in the TV Academy at George Jenkins High.
