As one of 18 finalists, Lincoln received $5,000 from the Intel Foundation and will be honored September 13 at the Intel Schools of Distinction Awards event in Washington, D.C.

This is the second time in six years that Lincoln has been honored by Intel. In 2005, Lincoln was named the best elementary school in the country for technology innovation in a national program sponsored by Intel and the Scholastic educational resource company.

Six schools will be named Intel Schools Of Distinction at the Washington event next week and will receive an additional $5,000 from Intel and a package of goods and services valued at approximately $100,000. The packages will include computer hardware, software and teacher professional development products. As a finalist, Lincoln is also in contention to be selected as a “Star Innovator” from Intel and receive an additional $25,000 and other prizes and services.

Intel sponsors the Schools Of Distinction Awards to honor schools for implementing superior math and science programs and serving as models for other schools. Lincoln is a finalist for its excellence in mathematics.

According to Intel, the Schools of Distinction designation “honors schools in mathematics that offer their students a rigorous, challenging and engaging program that teaches mathematics skills and how to apply them to solve real-life problems, approach projects as a member of a team, and communicate succinctly on the subject.”

Intel names 18 award finalists, three finalists each in elementary, middle and high school categories for both science and mathematics.

Joining Lincoln as a 2010 award finalist were schools from Alabama, California, Connecticut, Illinois, Kansas, Louisiana, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Texas and Virginia.

Lincoln Avenue Academy has received an “A” FCAT grade from the state for nine consecutive years, 2002 to 2010.
