21 Polk Schools Receive Superior Ratings In Sunshine State Young Readers Festival

Twenty-one Polk schools received superior ratings in the 2009-2010 Sunshine State Young Readers Book Festival. The festival was the culmination of a year-long reading of books on the Sunshine State Young Readers List by elementary and middle students. There were 15 books on both the elementary and middle school list.

The festival was held near the end of the 2009-2010 school year and schools competed in a number of activities related to the contents of the listed books. The competitions included a quiz bowl, video advertisement, display advertisement and performances acting out segments of the books.

Six elementary schools received two superior ratings in the various events. They were: Bethune Academy (Haines City), Laurel Elementary (Poinciana), Lincoln Avenue Elementary (Lakeland), Padgett Elementary (Lakeland), Philip O’Brien Elementary (Lakeland) and Rochelle School Of The Arts elementary grades (Lakeland).

Alta Vista Elementary (Haines City), Dale R. Fair Babson Park Elementary, Davenport School Of The Arts elementary grades, Highland City Elementary, Horizons Elementary (Davenport) and Wendell Watson Elementary (Lakeland) also received a superior rating in one of the competitive events.

Southwest Middle in Lakeland received four superior ratings in each of the middle school competitive events.

Berkley Middle (Auburndale) and Lake Gibson Middle (Lakeland) received three superior ratings in the middle school competition.

Middle schools receiving two superior ratings were Davenport School Of The Arts middle grades, Denison Middle (Winter Haven), Discovery Academy (Lake Alfred) and McLaughlin Middle And Fine Arts Academy (Lake Wales).

Crystal Lake Middle (Lakeland), Dundee Ridge Middle, Rochelle School Of The Arts middle grades and Westwood Middle (Winter Haven) received one superior rating each.
