Lakeland Highlands Middle School Named Winning School in Governor’s Wellness Challenge

July 31, 2012

Lakeland Highlands Middle School is one of six schools in Florida chosen to be the recipient of the Governor’s Wellness Challenge. Winning schools are each given $2,500 to use towards the purchase of fitness equipment.

The Governor’s Wellness Challenge recognizes schools making a positive difference in the lives of Florida’s students by promoting fitness, wellness and a healthier lifestyle. Schools are invited to submit a short video entry that highlights the school’s best practices in fitness and nutrition education.

On the topic of physical education, Florida Governor Rick Scott says, “As we work to create educational opportunities for each and every child in Florida, I believe that healthy bodies are linked to healthy minds. Physical activity and education, along with balanced nutrition are the tools that give school children the strength and focus they need to succeed in the classroom.”

Two elementary schools, two middle schools, a high school, and an institution that serves students in PK-12th grades, received the awards. The Governor’s Wellness Challenge is supported by Florida’s Foundation and United Healthcare.
