June 24, 2010

Mock Trial Camp Has Openings

A mock trial camp in July at Lakeland’s George Jenkins High has openings. The camp is for any student who will be in the 9th or 10th grade in 2010-2011 at any school and interested in learning more about the legal field. Campers will be assigned a case and will learn how to prepare and present a court trial. Campers will take on roles as attorneys and witnesses.

Instructors include staff of George Jenkins High’s Academy of Legal Studies, attorneys from the Lakeland Bar Association and student members of George Jenkins’ mock trial team. Learning will take place in the school’s classroom that has been remodeled into a courtroom and includes trial preparation, evidence presentation, trial and court procedure, opening statements, direct examination, cross examination, the closing argument and professionalism. The culminating event will be a full trial held in the courtroom.

The camp cost is $50 and will be held 8 a.m to 3 p.m daily, Monday, July 26 to Thursday, July 29 at George Jenkins High, 6000 Lakeland Highlands Road, Lakeland. Campers must provide their own transportation to and from camp. Contact Steve Wilder, lead teacher of George Jenkins’ Academy of Legal Studies at (863) 242-3837 or steve.wilder@polk-fl.net to register or for further information.
