Tiquisha Monroe, a Winter Haven resident and senior at Eagle Lake’s Lake Region High is among approximately 1,000 students nationally and 52 in Florida named a Gates Millennium Scholar. Tiquisha will have her entire post-secondary education paid for by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Gates Millennium Scholars are awarded to minority students based on outstanding academic accomplishments, leadership skills and community involvement. Tiquisha is the lone Polk County recipient to receive a Gates scholarship in 2010.

The Gates Millennium Scholar program is managed by the United Negro College Fund in partnership with the American Indian Graduate Center Scholars program, the Hispanic Scholarship Fund and the Asian & Pacific Islander American Scholarship Fund.
The Gates scholarship will pay for all of Tiquisha’s higher education up to and including a doctorate. Tiquisha plans to attend Pasco-Hernando Community College and study nursing with intentions of earning a registered nurse degree. She plans to participate in intercollegiate athletics at Pasco-Hernando as a member of the cross country team. Following Pasco-Hernando, Tiquisha plans to transfer to the University of South Florida and pursue a doctorate in nursing. She eventually hopes to work in a children’s hospital. She also plans to pursue a minor degree in Spanish.
