Mock Presidential Debate, Meeting Notice, Teacher Recruitment

High School Students Hold Mock Presidential Debate

The public is invited to a mock United States presidential candidate debate on Wednesday, May 21, 2008, 2:30 p.m. at Lakeland’s George Jenkins High. This is a student-led event and there is no charge to attend. Student representatives will debate and discuss political viewpoints on issues facing the country. The event will include multimedia presentations and question and answer sessions. Young people’s interests and involvement in today’s prominent national issues and current events will be highlighted.

George Jenkins High is located at 6000 Lakeland Highlands Road in Lakeland. Contact the school at 863-648-3566 and ask for the student council office for further information on this event.

Meeting Notice

The school board will meet in an attorney-client session during the Tuesday, May 27, 2008 work session. The attorney-client session will take place at 10:30 a.m. , May 27 in the superintendent’s conference room of the district administrative office, 1915 South Floral Avenue, Bartow.

Teacher Recruitment Information Session

The Polk Public Schools are having an information session on Thursday, June 19 for individuals interested in becoming a teacher in Polk County. The session is Thursday, June 19, 6 p.m. at Highlands Grove Elementary, 4510 Lakeland Highlands Road, Lakeland.

The meeting will discuss the steps to become a teacher and application requirements for individuals with the following qualifications:
--holding a bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university but did not major in education
--holding a bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university with a major in education
--holding a valid Florida certificate for full-time teaching
--holding a valid out-of-state certificate for full-time teaching
