State Science And Engineering Fair Results

Seven public school students won awards at the 54th Annual State Science And Engineering Fair held at the Lakeland Center earlier this month. More than 850 students in grades six through 12 from all parts of the state competed in Lakeland with their science and engineering fair projects.
Matthew Hewett, a seventh grader at Lakeland Highlands Middle, won first place in the botany competition for his project titled “The Effect of Gravity on the Growth of Pea Plants.” His first place finish earned him a $50 cash award from the James F. Miley Award Fund and $200 from Natalie’s Orchid Island Juice Company. Matthew’s science and engineering fair advisor was Lakeland Highlands Middle teacher Mark Jones.
The six other public school students winning awards are listed with their grade, school, award won, competition category, project title and science fair advisor. They are:
- Prachiti Dalvi, eleventh grade, Bartow International Baccalaureate, third place, medicine and health, “Determination of Amyloid-Beta levels through regulation of Ataxin – 1 Pathway.” Advisor is Deborah Kennon.
- Summer Monroe, eighth grade, Lawton Chiles Middle, third place, engineering, “Levee Failure “Scour Experiment.” Advisor is Susan LeRoy.
- Alana Snyder, eighth grade, Bartow Middle, third place, engineering, “How does Wood Debris affect the compressive strength of Concrete?” Advisor is Brian Gann.
- Pranali Dalvi, eleventh grade, Bartow International Baccalaureate, fourth place, biochemistry, “Characterization of a Biophysics Simulation to Evaluate p53 Apoptosis.” Advisor is Deborah Kennon.
- Andrea Yancy, ninth grade, Haines City International Baccalaureate, honorable mention, physics and astronomy, “Turbine blade efficiency.” Advisor is Bruce Sabin.
- Aubrey Presnell, eighth grade, Lakeland Highlands Middle, recognition award, physics and astronomy, “Windows- What a ‘Pane.’”Advisor is Judy Thomas.
