Magnet, Choice Applications, Sales Tax Oversight Committee, Book Bowl Finals

Magnet, Choice Applications

The period from May 5 to May 30 is the final opportunity for student applications to Polk County magnet and choice schools for the 2008-2009 school year. Applications can be submitted online only. Applications will posted online starting at 8 a.m., May 5 at www.polk-fl.net under the “Announcements” heading on the school district’s home page. Individuals without computer or Internet access can visit any magnet or choice school or the Office of Magnet, Choice and Charter Schools in Bartow to complete the application on school district computers. Applications will be processed according to date received. Call the Office of Magnet, Choice and Charter Schools at (863) 534-0631 for further information.

Sales Tax Oversight Committee

The public is invited to a Tuesday, May 20 sales tax oversight committee meeting held at the school district administrative office , 1915 South Floral Avenue, Bartow. The meeting begins at 5:30 p.m. in the superintendent’s conference room. The sales tax oversight committee, composed of community members, was formed by the school district after voters approved a 2003 referendum authorizing an additional ½-cent sales tax for school construction. Book Bowl Finals

The public is invited to the 6th Annual Book Bowl Finals to be held Thursday, May 22 at the Jim Miles Professional Development Center, 5204 U.S. Highway 98 South, Lakeland. The Book Bowl features student teams from elementary and middle schools competing by answering questions about assigned books on the Sunshine State Readers List.

The elementary school finals begin at 10 a.m. on May 22. The middle school finals follow at 1 p.m. There is no charge to attend the Book Bowl finals. Schools throughout the county competed during the 2007-2008 school year for the right to compete in the finals. Information: (863) 647-4715.
