State Science Fair Winners

April 23, 2008

Nine public school students won awards at the 2008 State Science And Engineering Fair held April 16 to 18 at the Lakeland Center. Nearly 900 middle and high school students from across the state submitted projects in 14 different scientific categories.

Public school students winning awards at the State Science And Engineering Fair are listed with their school, competition category, award, project title and sponsoring teacher.

Pranali Dalvi, Bartow International Baccalaureate, biochemistry, second place, “A novel approach for the Inhibition or Elimination of Carcinogenic Cells for the treatment of carcinomas,” teacher is Debbie Kennon.

Jennings DePriest, Jewett Middle Academy (Winter Haven), computers, second place, “Efficient flat file data processing,” teacher is Kim Rex.

David Futch, Winter Haven High, zoology, “Providing Habitat for Threatened Drymachon corais couperi Utilizing Simulated Gopherus polyphemus Burrows,” teacher is Rhea McKinney.

Bianca Mulaney, Lawton Chiles Middle Academy (Lakeland), computers, third place, “Hazardous Hurricane: Prediction of Hurricane Damage to Mobile Homes,” teacher is James Winegar.

Alana Snyder, Bartow Middle, engineering, third place and a U.S. Navy Science Award, “How does water content affect concrete strength?” Teacher is Nora McLeod.

Aatish Patel, Lawton Chiles Middle Academy, chemistry, recognition award, “Can the Volume of Electrolytes be Determined through Distillation?” Teacher is James Winegar.

Jacob Renuart, Daniel Jenkins Academy (Haines City), medicine and health, recognition award, “Comparing Stomach Acid Remedies in Neutralizing an Acid Source,” teacher is Jack Cassidy.

Neha Shah, Bartow International Baccalaureate, earth and space, recognition award, “High Hair-midity!” Teacher is Debbie Kennon.

Kimberly Shumate, Jewett Middle Academy, zoology, recognition award, “Oiled Mosquito, Which essential oil decreases the life time of mosquito larvae the best?” Teacher is Kim Rex.

In addition, the following Polk public school students qualified and competed with their projects at the Science Science And Engineering Fair: Joseph Baranski (Bartow International Baccalaureate), Prachiti Dalvi (Bartow International Baccalaureate), Hiral Juvanji (Bartow International Baccalaureate) and Tabitha White (Haines City International Baccalaureate).
