The Family Network on Disabilities of Florida, Inc. and the Exceptional Student Education Department of the Polk Public Schools are holding conferences for parents and guardians of special needs individuals. The conference topic is transitioning special needs students from school to the community and will be held on three separate days at three different locations. The public is invited to the Elementary Science Fair on Thursday, April 30, 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. at the Bartow Civic Center, 2250 South Floral Avenue, Bartow. There is no charge to attend. Nearly 400 science projects from students in 71 elementary schools are submitted for the fair. Public viewing of the projects is from 4:30 to 5 p.m. with a formal program being held at approximately 5 p.m. Students selected a topic of interest that could be answered through measurable experimentation. Traviss Career Center in Lakeland will have a day-long Open House and Career Fair on Thursday, April 30. Traviss Career Center, 3225 Winter Lake Road, Lakeland offers nearly 40 career, vocational and technical programs for high school and adult students. The Open House on April 30 is from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. and the Career Fair is from 9 a.m. to 12 noon.
Traviss programs include practical nursing, legal administrative specialist, dental assisting and air conditioning, refrigeration and heating technology.
Activities for the Open House and Career Fair include program demonstrations, tours, health screenings by students in medical programs, massages by massage therapy students and a car exhibit by automotive technology students. There will also be refreshments and door prizes. There is no cost to attend.

The public is invited to the 3rd Annual Superintendent’s Fine Arts Festival to be held 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday, May 2 in the amphitheater area of Lake Mirror, 121 South Lake Avenue, Lakeland. There is no charge to attend and the festival includes displays and exhibits of students’ visual art and musical performances by school jazz bands, string ensembles and show choirs. A total of 16 musical groups will perform for 30 minutes each beginning at 10 a.m. The day culminates with a 6 p.m. performance by an all-star jazz band composed of high school students. The public is invited to the Elementary Showcase Concert to be held 7 p.m., Tuesday, May 5 at Florida Southern College’s Branscomb Auditorium. More than 250 elementary music students from 53 schools will perform.
