The public is invited to the Career And Adult Educators Showcase on Wednesday, April 8 at the Polk County Agriculture Center, Stuart Building, 1702 Highway 17-98 South, Bartow. Schools will present displays and demonstrations of programs in career, vocational, technical and adult education at the showcase. Programs to be presented include culinary arts, legal studies, design, technology, medical, cosmetology, air conditioning and automotive. The showcase is from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m, April 8. There is no cost to attend.
A $5 spaghetti lunch prepared by culinary arts students will be sold at the showcase. Contact Melissa Konkol-Bennett at (863) 534-7447 for showcase information and to reserve a lunch.
Participating schools are Bartow High, Boone Middle (Haines City) Gause Academy (Bartow), East Area Adult School (Auburndale), George Jenkins High (Lakeland), Kathleen High (Lakeland), Traviss Career Center (Lakeland) and Union Academy (Bartow).
The public invited to various events of the 54th Annual State Science and Engineering Fair to be held at the Lakeland Center from April 15 to 17.
More than 850 students from grades six through 12 from all parts of the state will compete in Lakeland with their science projects. They will compete for scholarships, cash, a NASA summer internship and a chance to compete at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair to be held in Nevada in May. More than 300 judges from the Florida science community will evaluate projects.
The following science and engineering fair events are free and open to the public at the Lakeland Center.
• Wednesday, April 15, 7:30 to 9 p.m., Opening Ceremony and Colloquium.
• Thursday, April 16, 7 to 9 p.m. Public viewing of science fair projects. Science fair categories include categories of botany, chemistry, engineering, environmental science, health, medicine and physics.
• Friday, April 17, 7:30 to 10 p.m., Awards Ceremony.

2009 is the second consecutive year that Polk has hosted the State Science and Engineering Fair and the sixth time Polk has hosted the fair since it began in 1956. Florida Southern College was the site for the 1961 fair and The Lakeland Center has hosted it in 1985 (venue was known as Lakeland Civic Center then), 1998, 2002 and 2008.
