The Maryland-based School Nutrition Association has named the Polk Public Schools Foodservice Department as a 2009 District of Excellence. The association selects districts for the award based on nutrition and nutrition education, communications and marketing, administration and operations.
A peer review committee assesses school districts and selects recipients. Since 2006, only 30 school districts nationally have received this award. The Polk County Public Schools are the first and only in Florida to be named a District of Excellence during that time.
Polk is now eligible to apply for the prestigious District of the Year award which offers a grant up to $25,000.

Marcia Ford, the school district’s director of grant acquisitions, received the Elizabeth J. Hobert Award from the Florida K-12 Grant Development Network. The annual award, named for the network’s founding president, honors a member of the network for service and valuable contributions to the profession. Members from all of Florida’s 67 public school districts are considered for the award. Ford is also a past president of the organization.
