The public is invited to the semifinals and finals of the 26th Annual High School Academic Tournament. The semifinals are Wednesday, February 25, 3 to 6 p.m. The finals are the following day, Thursday, February 26, also 3 to 6 p.m. Both the semifinals and finals will be held at Lake Region High, 1995 Thunder Road, Eagle Lake. There is no charge to attend.
High school teams will test their knowledge in mathematics, science, language arts, social studies, world languages, technology, fine arts and humanities. A high school championship will be awarded to the first place school after the finals are completed.
A team of tourney all-stars from the various high schools will be announced after the finals and will represent Polk at the Education Commissioner’s Academic Challenge held in Orlando in April.

The public is invited to the 9th Annual History Fair to be held Friday, February 27, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Middle and high school students have submitted nearly 170 entries in historical research for the history fair. The fair includes video documentaries and live reenactments and performances. There is no charge to attend. Most of the competition will be held at the Polk Historical Museum, 100 East Main Street, Bartow. The documentaries competition and the awards ceremony will be held at the First Baptist Church of Bartow, 410 East Church Street. The public is invited to the MathCounts competition to be held Saturday, February 28 at Polk Community College, 999 Avenue H NE, Winter Haven. Mathcounts is a national mathematics competition for middle school students. It promotes student interest in math by making math as challenging, exciting and prestigious as a school sport. There is no charge to attend. The morning competition is from 9:45 to 11:30 a.m. The afternoon competition, which includes an awards ceremony, is from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. Information: John Miller, (863) 534-0630.
