The 21st Century Community Learning Centers afterschool program is currently seeking sites for the 2008-2009 school year.
The 21st Century Community Learning Centers is an initiative of the federal government’s No Child Left Behind Act and currently operates afterschool programs at various public and charter schools throughout Polk County and at Lakeland Housing Authority sites.
The program is looking to add more sites for the 2008-2009 school year including private schools and community and faith-based organizations.
A meeting will be held on Wednesday, February 6, 1 p.m. at the Jim Miles Professional Development Center for schools and organizations interested in receiving a grant to host an afterschool site in the 2008-2009 school year. The Jim Miles Professional Development Center is located at 5204 U.S. Highway 98 South, Lakeland.
The 21st Century afterschool program includes tutoring and academic enrichment activities in reading and math. 21st Century programs also provide youth development activities, drug and violence prevention programs, technology education, art, music, recreation, counseling and character education.
