An orientation for parents and their students who will be ninth graders at four Lakeland-area high schools in 2010-2011 will be held on Thursday, February 11.
The parent-student orientation will be February 11, 6:30 to 8 p.m. at George Jenkins High, Kathleen High, Lake Gibson High and Lakeland High. Current eighth-graders and their parents are encouraged to attend these orientations at the high school they are zoned to attend. These informational meetings will discuss registration, graduation requirements, student and school expectations, academic programs and electives.
Orientations at George Jenkins and Lake Gibson will be held in the school auditoriums. Kathleen High and Lakeland High will hold the orientations in their school cafeterias.

The public is invited to jazz band concerts by middle and high school students. The concerts will be held Thursday, February 11 at the theatre of Polk State College in Winter Haven, 999 Avenue H NE. The concerts are from 3 to 5:30 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. There is no cost to attend. Jazz bands from middle and high schools will perform in 20 to 30-minute intervals. The concerts are judged by a state panel and the bands receive their annual state assessment and rating based on their performances. Information: (863) 647-4729.
The public is invited to the semifinals and finals of the 27th Annual High School Academic Tournament. The semifinals are Wednesday, February 17, 3 to 6 p.m. The finals are the following day, Thursday, February 18, also 3 to 6 p.m. Both the semifinals and finals will be held at Lake Region High, 1995 Thunder Road, Eagle Lake. There is no charge to attend.
High school teams will test their knowledge in mathematics, science, language arts, social studies, world languages, technology, fine arts and humanities. A high school championship will be awarded to the first place school after completion of the finals.
A team of tourney all-stars from the various high schools will be announced after the finals and will represent Polk at the Education Commissioner’s Academic Challenge held in Orlando in April.
