Polk County Public Schools
The Library Media Services Department of the Polk Public Schools is recruiting males to be reading volunteers for students.
The Polk County program hopes to assign males to work with students at 32 schools throughout the county to help students with reading.
The target group for the reading volunteers will be boys in the fifth, seventh and ninth grades although the program will be for all students.
“Research has shown that boys tend to fall behind in reading and this program will hopefully help them learn to love reading at an early age,” said Jacqueline Rose, senior coordinator of the school district’s library media services department.
There will be a meeting for potential volunteers in the Polk County program on Thursday, February 5, 5 p.m. at the Jim Miles Professional Development Center, 5204 U.S. Highway 98 South, Lakeland. Interested volunteers must go through the school district’s volunteer approval process. A volunteer application is available at https://volunteer.polk-fl.net.

Rose said a goal of the program is for volunteers to read with students during their lunch break at least twice a month. Volunteers could also discuss an assigned book that both the volunteer and students have read. Schools participating in the Polk County program are listed by location.
