“Walking through a Reading Wonderland”

January 18, 2013

Oscar J. Pope Elementary parents and craftsThis week, Florida’s First Lady Ann Scott kicked off “Celebrate Literacy Week, Florida!” The week-long celebration of literacy brings together thousands of volunteers who read to children in classrooms throughout the state. It’s part of a literacy campaign themed “Take the Lead and Read.”

But long before this week, the staff at Oscar J. Pope Elementary made reading a priority. Students and parents were treated to a “reading wonderland” at the latest Oscar J. Pope Elementary parent night held on Thursday, December 13. Staff members presented holiday themed stories with arts and crafts activities to help promote fun ways to incorporate reading at home.

In conjunction with the classroom activities, the book fair stayed open that evening to accommodate parents and their busy schedules.  In addition, each classroom decorated a holiday wreath for a PTO sponsored silent auction.  During the silent auction, volunteers served cookies and juice while encouraging parents to continue bidding.  Principal Birdsong and Assistant Principal Huntley joined in the bidding extravaganza!  At the end of the evening, all wreaths were sold raising almost $600 for the PTO!
