All parents are invited to an event designed for them to help their children at home with math and reading and to prepare their children for the FCAT. Kathleen Elementary is sponsoring a Family Literacy Night on Tuesday, January 27, 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Harmony Baptist Church, 1645 North Webster Avenue, Lakeland.
Information will be provided to parents to help children at home with math and reading proficiency and FCAT learning materials will also be given out for use at home.
The event will feature guest speaker Freddie Mitchell, a former Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver from Kathleen High and UCLA. Door prizes will also be awarded at the conclusion of the event.
Contact Katheen Elementary teacher Antionette Kirby at (863) 853-6030 for further information on the event.
Dundee Elementary recently participated in McDonald’s Passport To Play learning event. Passport to Play combines learning about another culture through sports.
Dundee Elementary students played Kung Fu Says, a Chinese version of Simon Says and Boomerang golf using an Australian-style boomerang. They also played tlatchiti, a Mexican game similar to soccer and korfball, a game similar to basketball played in Holland.
Dundee Elementary also received a visit from Dunkin, a 10-year-old labrador and Southeastern Guide Dog. Students learned that dogs go through a 21-month training before being paired with a handicapped companion. They also learned that proper training costs approximately $120,000 and that companions pay no cost. The dog training is paid for by donations and through work of the Lions Club, the students learned.
Socrum Elementary recently celebrated the opening of its new art gallery by having a poetry slam in the facility. A new building at the school resulted in gallery space for student art. The gallery includes a computer bank for online learning and activity centers for art projects involving colors, shapes, patterns and textures. The gallery includes computer slide shows of art and large free-standing display boards showcasing art.
