Magnet and Choice School Application Period, Special Needs Workshop

Magnet And Choice School Application Period

Polk County magnet and choice school applications for the 2008-2009 school year will be available starting Monday, January 21, 2008 at www.polk-fl.net/parents. The week of January 21 to 25 is the open enrollment period for applications. Applications received during the open enrollment period will be part of the initial lottery selection for magnet and choice school openings. Applications received from January 26 through February 15 will be assigned a waiting list number based on the date received.

Workshop For Parents, Guardians Of Special Needs Students

Four organizations will hold a free workshop for parents and guardians of special needs students. The workshop will be held Tuesday, January 22, 9 to 11 a.m. at the Jim Miles Professional Development Center in Lakeland and will discuss Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). The Jim Miles Center is at 5204 U.S. Highway 98 South, Lakeland and the workshop will be held in the center’s Palm Room.

The workshop is being coordinated by the Florida Diagnostic Learning Resources System (FDLRS), Polk Public Schools Exceptional Student Education Department, the Florida Inclusion Network (FIN) and the Family Network on Disabilities (FND).

IEPs are created by teachers, parents, school administrators and related services personnel to improve educational results for children with disabilities. The IEP is the cornerstone of a quality education for each child with a disability.

The workshop presenter will be Tara Bremer of FND.
