WHHS National Award

TV production students from Winter Haven High have hit the big time! The school’s Blue Devil Television Department (BDTV) has won a $5,000 award from Allstate Insurance Company for its video titled “X the Text,” the only school in Florida to win such an award.

BDTV competed with high schools all over the United States and won the Judges Award for their “X the Text” video. The 90-second video shows about the dangers of texting on cell phones while driving. It also encourages students to pledge not to text and drive.

The winning video was produced by students Jessica Bickel, now a senior at Winter Haven High, and Jonathan Lopez, a former student who now attends the Florida State University. The check presentation was covered by WTSP Channel 10 News of Tampa Bay and was featured on its nightly newscast.

BDTV, which is part of Pam Mizelle’s Instructional TV department at Winter Haven High, has won numerous other county, state and national awards for its TV production class.

Random Show #1 Due

Please make a QuickTime movie of one of your news shows from Tuesday, November 1 through Friday, November 11, 2011.

Please label that movie ABCDRandomShow1, where ABCD represents your school name (for example: RBWE for Robert Bruce Wagner Elementary; LCMA for Lawton Chiles Middle School; LGHS for Lake Gibson High School).

Using the News Show Evaluation Rubric available on the ITV Web site, our staff will provide you with feedback on your show.

The random collection of news shows in this manner helps ITV meet district requirements for the evaluation of programs. We work in a data-driven, assessment-based profession. News show evaluations provide us with meaningful information about an important way that our schools use their media production equipment, studio space, other school resources, and time.

Please return the flash drive to the ITV office in the Jim Miles Professional Development Center by Friday, November 18, 2011.
