Special Needs Workshops, All-County Chorus

Special Needs Workshops

Three groups have partnered to offer free workshops for parents and guardians of students with disabilities. The workshops are coordinated by the Florida Diagnostic Learning Resources System (FDLRS), the Exceptional Student Education Department of the Polk Public Schools and the Center for Autism & Related Disabilities at the University of South Florida. The workshop schedule and topic summary is listed below. The workshops can be attended separately but each session’s learning uses information from a previous workshop. All workshops will be held in the Exceptional Student Education building of the Polk Public Schools, located on 2nd Street in the Bartow Municipal Airport off of U.S. 17. Tuesday, November 3, 10 to 11:30 a.m., Parenting with Positive Behavior Support (PBS): Reviews PBS method of discipline and how to incorporate into parenting. Parents will learn behavioral causes and how to use positive support to correct negative behaviors.

Wednesday, November 11, 10 to 11:30 a.m., Developing Communication to Replace Challenging Behavior: Assessment of positive verbal statement strategies to increase favorable behavior.

Tuesday, November 17, 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., Visual Strategies for Children with Autism: Identification of visual strategies to prevent challenging behaviors. Parents will create visual materials at this workshop to take and use at home with their children.

All-County Chorus

The public is invited to the All-County Chorus performance on Tuesday, November 17, 7:30 p.m. at Florida Southern College’s Branscomb Auditorium, 111 Lake Hollingsworth Drive, Lakeland. There is no charge to attend.

More than 300 middle and high school students will perform. Arrangements to be sung include J’entends Le Moulin by Emily Crocker, American Folk Rhapsody by Linda Spevacek and Bloom by Philip Silvey.

Conductors will be Tucker Biddlecombe of Tallahassee’s Lawton Chiles High, Karen Buie of Lakeland’s Southwest Middle and Todd Peterson of Naples’ Barron Collier High.
