The school board will meet in a workshop at 9 a.m., Tuesday, February 23 to discuss the superintendent search with the Hazard, Young, Attea and Associates, Ltd. search firm. The Polk Public Schools are offering outdated, surplus textbooks and library books to the public for no charge. The books will be displayed and available on Wednesday, February 24 and Thursday, February 25, 8 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. both days, at the school district’s surplus book warehouse, 5900 Yates Road, Lakeland. The public is invited to a Tuesday, March 2 sales tax oversight committee meeting held at the school district administrative office, 1915 South Floral Avenue, Bartow. The meeting begins at 5:30 p.m. in the facilities conference room. The sales tax oversight committee, composed of community members, was formed by the school district after voters approved a 2003 referendum authorizing an ½-cent sales tax for school construction. The statewide FCAT testing period is from March 9 to March 19. The school district’s Office of Assessment, Accountability and Evaluation has registration information for parents of home school students and individuals who graduated with a certificate of completion and need to pass the FCAT.
Home school parents and individuals with a certificate of completion needing to pass the FCAT must call the office at (863) 534-0688 by March 2 to register for the FCAT and to receive FCAT testing information.
For students with a certificate of completion, FCAT reading retakes will be March 9 and FCAT math retakes will be March 10.
The public is invited to view science fair projects submitted by middle and high school students for the Regional Science Fair. Public viewing of the projects will be from 2 to 4 p.m., Friday, March 5 at the LTB building on the campus of USF Polytechnic, 3433 Winter Lake Road, Lakeland. Science fair research includes projects in botany, chemistry, engineering, environmental science, health and medicine and physics. There is no cost to attend. As many as 400 students from 30 middle and high schools have submitted projects in previous science fairs. The public is also invited to the awards ceremony, 5 to 8 p.m., Sunday, March 7 at the LTB building of the USF-Polytechnic campus. There is also no cost to attend the awards ceremony.
