Latest Information on Proposed School Zones

East Area Middle School Rezoning

Boone Middle School and Dundee Ridge Middle School are overcrowded and have 16 and 17 portables respectively.

Lake Alfred Addair, Lake Marion Creek, and McLaughlin Middle School and Daniel Jenkins Academy have space available for more students.

Summary of Recommendations

(Each numbered item below correlates with one of the four attached maps and with the chart showing changes in demographics if all or some of these changes are adopted.)

  1. Dundee Ridge to McLaughlin:  Rezone students from the southern part of Dundee Ridge’s zone to McLaughlin.  These would be the students living in the Waverly and Ranchettes areas. There are approximately 77 students in these areas.

  2. Denison  to McLaughlin:  Rezone students from Denison (the Carlton Arms apartments) to McLaughlin.  There are approximately 40 students in this area.

  3. Dundee Ridge to Lake Marion Creek:  6th graders who are currently 5th graders at Lake Marion Creek, Laurel Elementary, and Palmetto Elementary will all be proposed to go to Lake Marion Creek Elementary.  There are approximately 244 students in these areas.

  4. Boone to Daniel Jenkins:  The students currently on the wait list for Daniel Jenkins will be allowed to enroll, followed by the students in the one-mile walk zone who sign up to attend Daniel Jenkins.

  5. Boone to Lake Alfred-Addair:  Students along U.S. Highway 27 north of Dean Still Road will be proposed to go from Boone to Lake Alfred-Addair.  There are approximately 122 students in this area.

Mission

Planning and Concurrency is responsible for the ongoing coordination with Polk County and its member governments. This coordination includes gathering information on growth and development, implementation of interlocal agreements, capacity mitigation agreements and school concurrency, projections for new schools or additions to existing schools, site planning and acquisition, and coordinating planning activities with other Polk County Public Schools departments. The department also prepares the Five Year Program of Work, the Five Year Educational Plant Survey as well as population projections in consultation with Polk County and its member governments.
